I looked at my nails again this morning and I thought that it really needed a little something extra so I pulled out my OPI Black Shatter polish. I bought this about 3 weeks ago and I just keep forgetting to post on it. I'm sure you've all seen polishes like this before which seperate as they dry to make a shatter pattern.
This shatter polish can be a little tricky to work with because its success relies on using it under the correct conditions. First make sure you shake the bottle well because this polish can clump up and I usually have to shake it up after doing a few nails. You also need to make sure that whatever polish you apply it over is completely dry or this will not work properly and sometimes won't really seperate.
The amount of product you use also really affects how this polish seperates. You can only use one coat and if you use alot then the cracks will be quite thick and you end up with big blocks of black on your nails. If you use less then the shatter pattern is alot more delicate looking. I applied a bit more product in the photo above which is why there is so much pink visible in between the black. When you use less then the result looks more like this picture below which is how the polish looks like on one of my toe nails. It's applied over OPI Bring on the Bling glitter polish. This polish looks the best when you finish it off with a top coat and I use 2 coats of Seche Vite to get it as smooth as possible plus without a top coat the black can flake off sometimes.
This is the only shatter polish I've tried so I don't know how it compares to the others that are on the market but Barry M and BYS make cheaper alternatives. The Barry M seems to shatter into more rectangular shards and the BYS is a more subtle shatter pattern that is also available in different colours. Based on pictures I've seen, I have to say that I prefer the shatter pattern that results from the OPI more than the others because it looks like a more organic pattern if that makes sense.
I think that this polish is okay but it's definitely a trend polish so if you're not a big nailpolish fanatic or if you don't love the look then I say skip it because you probably won't get much use out of it. I'll probably end up using it once every blue moon but it's definitely not a must have for me. It's perfect for a 90's themed party though and it definitely makes me feel nostalgic when I wear it and reminds me of simpler times of slap bands and elastics and cross colours.
What do you think of OPI Black Shatter? Can you see yourself rocking this look on your nails or will you be passing?
Love the shattered look!
