Perfect Glow: Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors in Gold and Topaz

Becca's Shimmering Skin Perfector has to be my absolute favorite highlighter because it has a beautiful texture that sits really well on the skin and it contains a very fine shimmer. It comes in a few different colours that suit many skin tones and the creamy texture means that you can easily increase the amount of colour and shimmer you want by either patting the product on thicker or by blending it in well.

The shade names for this product are named after different metals and gem stones and it's available in the colours Pearl, Rose Quartz, Opal, Gold and Topaz. The first two are the lightest shades and have a cool tone and the last 3 are more warm toned. The colour Opal is the one that I think is the most versatile and it's useable on all skin tones. I've had this product in the colour Gold for a while and I thought that I was set but then I had the chance to swatch some of the other colours in person and I just had to get the colour Topaz as well.

The shade Gold is exactly what it sounds like and is a gold coloured highlighter that is very warm toned. Topaz also looks exactly like what it sounds like and is the colour of a topaz stone so it's a really beautiful bronzey colour. These two are the most suited to darker skin tones but I think Topaz would work really nicely as a subtle illuminating bronzer on fairer skin tones.

Here are some swatches. Gold is swatched first and Topaz is next to it.

How beautiful are they? I use Gold when I want a more obvious highlight as it pops more against my skin tone but it's still very natural looking. I like Topaz for during the day or as the perfect compliment for a 'no makeup' makeup look. Don't be put off by how dark these are if you're of a lighter skin tone because they honestly work across all skin tones depending on the look you're going for but if you're very fair and cool toned then I'd probably go for a different shade.

I like using these on the top of my cheekbones and sometime down my nose and above my lip. They work really well when applied with your fingers and you can either lightly tap them on to your skin or blend them in using circular motions. I like applying them under my foundation when I'm wearing a high coverage, matte or cream foundation and over my foundation if I'm using something sheer. I haven't found the perfect brush to use with these yet but something synthetic is better so it doesn't eat up to much product. A duo fibre brush would work well as would a foundation brush like the MAC 190.

I took some pictures of the Becca illuminators compared with the NARS Orgasm Illuminator. The NARS is in the middle and the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in the Gold is on the left and in Topaz on the right.

The texture of the NARS Orgasm illuminator is more watery than the Becca ones and I find that the Becca ones works much better for targeted highlighting where as the NARS is better to mix in with foundation. I think that the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal is the one that's the closest shade to the NARS Orgasm Illuminator but I much prefer the colour and texture of Opal and it's next on my wish list.

I warn you that these illuminators are quite pricey and usually run about $42 AUD but they come in a really good sized bottle and you get 50ml worth of product versus the 30ml or less that you usually get with other brands. The bottle itself has a pump but unfortunately one full pump is too much product so you might want to decant some into a small pot or just try and push the pump down as little as possible. Although I find that even after I push the pump down as little as I can, I still end up with too much product.

The bottle is made out of rubberised plastic rather than the glass that I initially thought it was made out of. I was disappointed at first but now I can see that it's actually better because I can throw it in my makeup drawer without worrying about it breaking. It's also relatively spill proof because it has a double lid. There's the big dark brown lid on the outside that has the usual silver Becca disc on the top and underneath this cap there's also a smaller clear pastic lid that sits right over the pump mechanism.

If you have a Becca counter near you then it's worth swatching these on your skin because they're definitely a cult favourite for a reason! If you've tried these before then I'd love to hear your thoughts on them so leave a comment below.

  1. Those are beautiful! I've never tried Becca products, don't even know if they are sold over here. I will definitely have a look though!

  3. prettyinthedesert: They are awesome and look amazing on the face and these swatches really don't do them justice. Becca's a bit tricky to purchase out of Australia, USA and the UK but I think it's pretty easy to get online. I purchased my stuff from strawberrynet.com because it was cheaper than the instore prices here.

Melanie: You're welcome! Gold is my favourite too and I usually have to stop myself from overdoing it with the gold coloured products :D

  4. Thank you so much for this post! I want to get Becca SSP in Topaz and was wondering how it performed compared to Nars Orgasm Illuminator (which I also want, lol). This review was so helpful, and I think I will get both :) Thanks again.

  5. Artemis: Glad I could help! I kept seeing the Topaz one popping up online but I couldn't find any good swatches anywhere so I had to swatch in store. I'm glad I did because I may have passed otherwise and it's so pretty!

The NARS Orgasm illuminator is very different to these so I think you can definitely get both and feel guilt free ;) Lol sorry for being an enabler :D
